Iran’s Morality Police

Iran’s Morality Police is the kind of public body people think of when rules about dress and conduct are enforced in daily life. By our assessment, its main strength is that the name is blunt and instantly understandable; there is no doubt about the kind of power it implies. That bluntness is also its limit, because a moral-policing unit is not built to feel welcoming or flexible. In practice the phrase carries a heavy, official tone, and it belongs to the same family as other order-enforcement labels rather than to anything ordinary or commercial. Compared with a generic police department, the focus is narrower and more visibly tied to social behavior. The name fits a state control role, not a public-facing service people would seek out for its own sake. It works as a clear label for coercive authority, and that is where it stops.
