Protein powders
Protein powder is the gym-and-breakfast supplement for people who want an easy way to add protein to a shake, porridge or baking. By our assessment, its main strength is convenience: it stores well, mixes into a lot of foods and makes protein intake simpler than cooking another full meal. The downside is that texture and flavor vary a lot, and some powders can taste chalky or leave a gritty drink if they are not mixed well. In practice it is less a food on its own than an ingredient with a very specific job. Compared with ready-to-drink shakes, protein powder gives more control; compared with meat, eggs or yogurt, it is narrower and more processed. protein powder is for people who want protein in a portable, shelf-friendly form, and it stops making much sense when the goal is a normal meal instead of a supplement.
