Paëlla royale aux petites gambas et au safran is a supermarket paella for people who want a quick seafood rice dish without starting from scratch. By our assessment, the saffron note and the small gambas give it the right idea of paella, with a little more polish than a plain mixed-rice tray. The downside is that prepared paella rarely has the pan-crisped bottom and layered seafood depth of a freshly made one, so the texture can feel flatter than the name suggests. In practice it is a heat-and-serve meal, closer to convenience cooking than restaurant paella. Against a full restaurant version it is a compromise; against a plain rice bowl it brings more character and a clearer Spanish profile. It is for people who want an easy seafood rice dish and not the whole ritual of making paella from the pan up, and the sauce does a lot of the work.
