Liberal Democratic Party of Russia

Liberal Democratic Party of Russia is the English rendering people use for the same Russian political party, so this is still about elections, faction discipline, and a brand that has been around long enough to be instantly recognized. By our assessment, it works best as a name for a durable political machine, not as a statement of liberal or democratic principles in the ordinary Western sense. The drawback is built into the gap between the words and the way the party is publicly known: the title sounds ideological, while the organization itself is mainly a fixed part of Russian party life. In practice that means slogans, hierarchy, and an established style of campaigning rather than a delicate policy debate. Against smaller parties it has reach and name recognition; against serious reform politics it looks blunt and old. It is mainly for readers trying to identify the group in English, not for anyone expecting the label to explain the politics.
