The Holy Mountain

The Holy Mountain asks for patience, because it is less a normal adventure story than a strange, symbolic journey through images and confrontations. By our assessment, its great strength is the sheer originality of its visual invention: costumes, tableaux, and surreal set pieces pile up in a way few films even attempt. The downside is obvious and real, since the movie can feel alienating if someone wants ordinary plot logic or emotional naturalism. In practice it is the sort of film you watch with full attention to what is on screen, not with an eye on tidy narrative payoff. The Holy Mountain sits far from conventional adventure films and closer to cult art cinema, where meaning comes from symbols, shocks, and visual excess. The 1973 date matters because it places the film in an era of freer, more daring experimental cinema, and the limit is that it remains demanding from first scene to last.
