Powaqqatsi asks for attention, not plot, and by our assessment, that is exactly why it matters. This is documentary cinema built from images, movement, and music, with a global sweep that treats work, landscape, ritual, and modernity as things to be watched rather than explained in a hurry. Its strength is the sustained visual rhythm; scenes are arranged so that texture and contrast do the argumenting. The downside is also the form: if someone wants clear narration or a conventional factual guide, it can feel distant and abstract. In practice it is immersive, slow, and unusually patient, the sort of film that rewards settling in rather than following incident. Compared with ordinary documentary, Powaqqatsi is far more essay-like and less reportorial, and that is its point. The film does not hand over conclusions quickly; it builds them through accumulation.
