Gertrud

Gertrud is a drama for viewers who want conversation, pauses and emotional stubbornness rather than plot movement. By our assessment, its power lies in how completely it trusts speech and silence to carry a relationship that will not bend to convenience. That gives it a severe, concentrated feel, and the cost is obvious: if someone wants incident, variety or quick release, this kind of film can seem immovable. In practice it feels like sitting with formal compositions and long exchanges that keep tightening the same emotional knot. Against most dramas, it is less interested in action than in moral and romantic pressure, which makes it feel unusually pure and demanding. The film sits well with people who like stage-like seriousness and patient performances, and it is a poor match for anyone hoping for broad emotional relief. Gertrud is one of those films where the restraint is the point, and the stillness never feels accidental.
