Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire leans on party-based role-playing where build choices, dialogue, and exploration matter as much as combat. By our assessment, it is for players who enjoy dense writing, long quest lines, and the slow business of assembling a party that can handle different kinds of trouble. Its main strength is the world itself: the archipelago setting, factions, and ship travel give the game a different shape from the usual fantasy road trip. The downside is that this is still an old-school cRPG at heart, so the systems, menus, and commitment can feel heavy if you want something breezier. In practice it is a lot of reading, planning, pausing, and checking abilities before a fight turns ugly. Against simpler modern RPGs, Deadfire asks for more patience and gives back more control over your party and choices. Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire is strongest when you want a large RPG that lets conversation and combat carry equal weight.
