Half-Life: Source

Half-Life: Source is the original Half-Life moved onto Valve’s Source engine, so it mostly matters to people who want that story and level design in a later technical wrapper. By our assessment, the game is more interesting as a curiosity than as a fresh remake, because the famous material underneath is already strong and the Source update changes the feel more than the substance. The downside is familiar: it has a reputation for being a bit rough around the edges as a conversion, so it is not the cleanest way to meet Black Mesa’s old campus or the original’s pacing. In practice it plays like classic Half-Life with a newer coat of engine polish, which means familiar shooting, scripted sequences, and a lot of movement through linked spaces. Compared with modern remakes and the original version, it sits in an awkward middle ground rather than becoming the best of both. People who simply want Half-Life should usually start somewhere else; people curious about Valve history or Source-era tinkering will find the most value here. It is the kind of release that shows what was carried over more than what was transformed.
