GitHub carries the everyday work of software teams: code hosting, pull requests, issues, reviews, releases, and the public or private repositories that hold all of it together. By our assessment, its real strength is collaboration around code, because it gives programmers a shared place to track changes, discuss them, and keep a record of what landed. The trade-off is that it assumes a fair amount of technical comfort, and the interface can feel busy once projects get large and branching starts to pile up. In practice it is part file store, part discussion board, part change log, which is why developers live in it while non-technical users often bounce off. Compared with GitLab or Bitbucket, GitHub remains the reference point for open-source hosting and code review. It is the natural choice for programmers and teams shipping software, and a poor fit for anyone who only wants a simple folder for documents.
