Xena: Warrior Princess

Xena: Warrior Princess is all about movement, sword fights, and the larger-than-life shape of a female action hero who can carry both camp and combat in the same scene. By our assessment, its real strength is confidence: it knows how to be energetic, broad, and unashamedly serial in a way that made it stand out from many adventure shows. The downside is that the style can be episodic and loud, with characters and plots sometimes serving the momentum more than the other way around. In practice it feels like brightly paced mythic action television, full of leather armor, travel, and big emotional swings. Compared with more serious fantasy series, Xena is less restrained and much more playful, which is part of the appeal and part of the limit. The Astrina Action label fits cleanly, and the show still reads as a clear example of the old school, character-driven genre run.
