Wife Swap

Wife Swap is the kind of reality format that gets its fuel from contrast: two households, two sets of rules, and one forced exchange. By our assessment, it works because the premise is simple enough to explain in one breath and awkward enough to produce immediate friction on screen. The limit is built in, though, because the show depends on the same swap mechanism every time and can become predictable once the setup is clear. In practice it is a lot of table rules, parenting habits and domestic habits being exposed to a stranger’s eye. Compared with family makeover shows, it is less about improvement than about collision, which gives it a sharper edge. The catalogue calls Wife Swap a TV series, and that broad label fits its format more than any single genre tag.
