Upstairs Downstairs

Upstairs Downstairs puts class division right into the rooms of a house, and that setup still gives the drama its force. By our assessment, its real strength is the way it makes upstairs privilege and downstairs labour feel like one connected social machine. The trade-off is that the format depends on manners, hierarchy and domestic service, so it can feel old-fashioned in the best and worst sense at once. In practice it is a series of rooms, uniforms, meals and rules, with emotion leaking through structure. Against more contemporary family drama, Upstairs Downstairs is more overtly about social order itself. It suits viewers who want costume drama with a clear historical spine, and it is less for anyone who needs brisk modern pacing.
