Tour of Duty

Tour of Duty gives military television a ground-level view: patrols, jungle heat, chain of command, and the routine stress of Vietnam-era service. By our assessment, that is what makes it matter more than a simple action show. Its main strength is the ensemble shape, which lets the war feel like daily work rather than a string of set pieces. The downside is that a series so tied to its period can feel boxed in by the same conditions again and again. In practice it plays as an earnest, worn-in drama with field reports, orders, and men trying to keep moving. It sits closer to serious war television than to glossy combat entertainment, and that gives it weight. Tour of Duty is for viewers who want the pressure of service, not just the noise of battle.
