Top of the Lake

Top of the Lake is a dark drama that uses a missing-person case to open out into place, power and damaged lives. By our assessment, its real strength is the uneasy atmosphere: remote landscape, moral pressure and the sense that every conversation carries weight. The downside is that the same intensity can make it feel heavy, even when the writing is sharp. In practice it asks for attention because it moves through investigation, character pain and social tension all at once. Compared with straightforward crime series, Top of the Lake is more interested in mood and trauma than in tidy procedure. It rewards viewers who like serious, slow-burn drama, and it does not try to be comfortable viewing.
