This is England

This is England has the rare force of a drama that is interested in class, youth culture and social pressure without sanding any of it down. By our assessment, what makes it stand out is how plainly it shows the texture of English life around its skinhead world, from loyalty and belonging to cruelty and drift. It is for viewers who can sit with character work and social detail, because the drama comes from behaviour, speech and small shifts in power. The limit is that this kind of TV asks for attention and a bit of patience; it is not background viewing. In practice it feels immediate and lived-in, with a strong sense of place rather than polish. Compared with broader issue dramas, it is sharper and more human, and the title’s plainness suits the material. This is England lands as a serious, grounded drama about who gets pulled in and who gets left out.
