The Golden Girls

The Golden Girls does a rare thing for sitcoms: it makes late-life friendship feel quick, frank, and full of plot. By our assessment, its real strength is the writing, which gives each woman a distinct voice and lets jokes come from shared history instead of easy sentiment. The downside is that some of the material is firmly of its era, so a modern viewer will notice the sharper edges and the old television rhythms around them. In practice the show feels fast for a series about older women, and that speed is part of why it still works. Compared with softer ensemble comedies, it is much sharper about sex, money, illness, and family friction. The Golden Girls is a strong pick for anyone who wants character-driven comedy with real bite, and it is less suited to viewers who want their sitcoms gentle and forgettable.
