The Cosby Show

The Cosby Show helped define the upscale family sitcom: a household comedy built around parents, children, school talk, money talk, and everyday domestic negotiation. By our assessment, it is especially good at making family argument feel relaxed and natural rather than frantic. The trade-off is that this kind of sitcom depends on a polished, orderly world, so the edges are smoother than in messier family comedies. In practice it is all about timing, dialogue, and the easy return to a living-room setup that can absorb small social problems. Against broader ensemble sitcoms, it is more centered on the home and on parental authority. The Cosby Show is a strong example of the genre it helped make standard, but it is not trying to be sharp satire or chaotic farce.
