The Carrie Diaries

The Carrie Diaries leans on the appeal of a young-writer origin story, with fashion, New York aspiration, and first-job nerves doing much of the work. By our assessment, its main strength is texture: the clothes, the city mood, and the way a coming-of-age story is tied to work, friendship, and self-image. The limit is that it stays in lighter teen-drama territory, so the stakes are emotional and social rather than especially hard-edged. In practice it is a show of outfits, apartments, parties, and the awkward feeling of trying to become a person in public. Compared with the darker or more cynical side of the genre, it is softer and more polished. The Astrina catalogue files it under Drama, and that label fits the shape of the series.
