Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is at its best when it keeps the action loose, noisy, and funny enough for kids without flattening the turtles into one note. By our assessment, the comic teamwork is the draw: four distinct personalities, plenty of gadgetry and martial-arts movement, and a villain-of-the-week rhythm that makes the show easy to follow. The downside is also plain: in this kind of franchise, repetition and toyetic plotting come with the territory, and deeper character work usually has to share space with the joke machine. It sits closer to bright Saturday-morning adventure than to serious animation, which is exactly why it lasts so well in memory. Compared with darker versions of the Turtles, it is lighter, sillier, and built for momentum. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is for viewers who want action with a cartoon grin and do not need much realism.
