Sean Saves the World is a family-and-work sitcom that depends on a familiar setup rather than on surprise, and that is both its selling point and its ceiling. By our assessment, it does the basics of broadcast comedy cleanly: domestic friction, office pressure, and a lead trying to keep one life from collapsing into the other. The downside is that the premise is very standard, so the show has to earn its laughs through timing and personality instead of through new ground. In practice it feels like a show that is easy to understand within minutes, which is useful, but it also means it rarely leaves much after the episode ends. Compared with the stronger, more distinctive comedies in the same broad lane, it sits in the middle of the road. Sean Saves the World is plain sitcom fare, and that plainness is exactly what defines it.
