Legend of Earthsea

Legend of Earthsea is a fantasy drama for viewers who know Ursula K. Le Guin’s books and want a filmed version of that world. By our assessment, its main attraction is the setting itself: islands, magic, names, and the idea of balance rather than loud spectacle. The weakness is that it has a reputation for feeling compressed next to the books, so the adaptation cannot carry all the depth readers expect from Earthsea. In use it comes across as earnest and restrained, more interested in mood and lore than in flashy effects. Compared with other fantasy TV, it sits on the quiet side and depends heavily on whether the viewer already cares about the source material. The title promises a whole mythic world, but the show has to do that work in a limited TV frame. It is the kind of adaptation that works best when the audience is already patient with sketched-out magic and broad strokes.
