Horror
Harper's Island squeezes a slasher setup into television form, so the pleasure is in the locked-island pressure, the rotating suspects, and the feeling that nobody is safe for long. By our assessment, it is strongest as horror television that understands how to use a wedding setting, isolated geography, and a body-count premise without pretending to be subtle. The downside is blunt: once the mask-and-motive machinery is in motion, there is only so much surprise any mystery-killer story can keep in reserve. In practice it is brisk, nervous viewing, with episodes that push forward on dread more than on elegance. It sits between a whodunit and a slasher, closer to the latter than to a neat detective puzzle, and that is where its energy comes from. Harper's Island fits viewers who want genre mechanics front and center, and it loses power if you want restrained horror or deep character study instead.
