Halt and Catch Fire

Halt and Catch Fire is strongest when it treats computing history as a workplace drama, not as a museum tour. By our assessment, that is what makes it stand out: the series uses the early personal-computing world, then later the rise of the internet, to frame ambition, rivalry, and the way technical change eats private life. The result is a drama that can feel intimate even while it is full of machines, code, and startup pressure. Its downside is that the subject asks for patience, because the show often cares more about process and personality than about easy payoff. In practice it rewards viewers who like character shifts, period detail, and the slow shape of an industry changing around people. Compared with more obvious tech stories, Halt and Catch Fire is less about gadgets than about the people who build and abandon them.
