Grace and Frankie turns an odd-couple setup into a long, dry comedy about friendship, aging, divorce, and the business of starting over after a life plan breaks. By our assessment, it is strongest when Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin are allowed to keep the jokes blunt and the emotions plain, so the show feels more lived-in than broad. Its limits are familiar to long sitcoms: some side plots lean on repetition, and the high-contrast premise can start to feel stretched. In practice it is a conversation-first series, built around timing, chemistry, and small domestic frustrations rather than plot machinery. It sits closer to character comedy than to joke-per-minute farce, and that is what makes it warmer than a lot of glossy streaming sitcoms. The people who usually get the most from it want relationship comedy with some bite, not constant movement. The show keeps returning to the same house, the same friendships, and the same unresolved messes, which is also where its comfort comes from.
