Garfunkel and Oates

Garfunkel and Oates turns the musical-comedy duo format into something pointed and very specific, which is exactly why it stands out. By our assessment, the appeal is in the writing: it mixes character comedy, original songs, and a very direct kind of joke-making that works best when the humour is allowed to be awkward and frank. The downside is also built in, because a duo-driven comedy can feel narrow if the songs or premise style do not land. In practice it has the quick, intimate feel of a small-stage act translated into TV form, with the performers carrying most of the weight. Compared with broad sitcoms, it is more niche and more dependent on taste. Garfunkel and Oates is comedy with music at the center, not a general-purpose series.
