Fawlty Towers

Fawlty Towers runs on panic, social discomfort, and the brittle precision of a hotel that never seems to catch a break. By our assessment, it is superb at turning small service disasters into tightly timed comedy, with John Cleese's physical control and the show's ruthless writing doing most of the work. The downside is that its cruelty is part of the joke, so the humour can feel sharp rather than cosy. In practice it is brisk, crowded, and almost theatrical, with every entrance and interruption placed for maximum damage. Against other sitcoms, it is leaner and more exact than broad farce. The Astrina catalogue files it under Comedy, which is exactly where this kind of pain-and-chaos setup belongs. People who want neat warmth probably will not find it there.
