Eastbound & Down

Eastbound & Down is a sports-adjacent character drama about a washed-up former pitcher, and it works because it keeps dragging ego, failure, and swagger into the same room. By our assessment, the appeal is in the hard, ugly comedy inside the drama: it is built on a loud lead character, bad judgment, and the way self-mythology collapses in real life. The downside is that the tone can be abrasive and the central figure is deliberately difficult, so it is not a warm or easy watch. In practice it feels blunt, messy, and oddly specific, with scenes that lean on humiliation as much as ambition. Compared with cleaner underdog stories, it is less inspirational and more interested in damage. It is the kind of show for viewers who can take a harsh lead and still enjoy the wreckage around him.
