Burning Love

Burning Love is a parody dating show, so its job is to mock the manufactured romance of reality TV rather than build a real competition. By our assessment, its best moments come from the deadpan way it pushes Bachelor-style conventions into silliness without pretending the format is anything but fake. The downside is that the joke has a narrower shelf life than a straight comedy, because much of the fun comes from knowing the dating-show machinery already. In practice it is fast, sketchy, and built on punchlines and absurd contestants more than on a long story. Compared with regular rom-com TV, Burning Love is more disposable on purpose and more dependent on the target it is parodying. It is the kind of show that works when the parody is still fresh in your head, and less well when the joke feels familiar. The result is a light fake-romance machine, not a real one.
