Boardwalk Empire

Boardwalk Empire stands out by treating Prohibition-era crime as political power, not just gangster color. By our assessment, its strengths are the period detail, the Atlantic City setting, and the sense that every deal is tied to public office, corruption, and violence at once. The trade-off is weight: the show can feel deliberate and dense, and it asks for patience with its many factions and its formal seriousness. In practice it has the feel of a boardroom thriller in period clothes, with costumes and sets doing a lot of the atmosphere work. Compared with lighter mob dramas, it is more sober, more historical, and less interested in easy charm. That makes it a better fit for viewers who want a crime drama with politics and consequence, and a poorer fit for anyone wanting quick laughs or a breezy pace. By our assessment, Boardwalk Empire is at its best when it lets the machinery of power show through the gangster story.
