71 Degrees North

71 Degrees North makes the number part of the brand, and that suits an action show that wants to feel like a challenge before it feels like a story. By our assessment, the appeal is in the physical competition side of the format, where endurance and outdoor difficulty do the work. The drawback is that the premise itself does a lot of the heavy lifting, so once the format is familiar there is less room for surprise. In practice it likely has the clipped pace and task-by-task rhythm that these adventure competitions rely on. It sits closer to survival challenge television than to scripted action drama, even if the catalogue calls it Action. 71 Degrees North is for viewers who like competition formats with weather, effort, and risk built into them.
