3rd Rock from the Sun

3rd Rock from the Sun turns the usual family-sitcom setup into an alien landfall story, and that high-concept joke is still the main reason it works. By our assessment, it is a comedy for people who like their sitcoms broad, brisk, and a little absurd, with the cast playing earthbound routines as if they were field reports. The pleasure is in the contrast between domestic squabbles and the aliens’ dead-serious confusion about everyday human behavior. It also has the easy rhythm of a network comedy that can reset each week and stay light on continuity. The downside is that the premise can feel repetitive once the joke of outsiders trying to pass as ordinary has been fully understood. It sits closer to classic premise-driven sitcoms than to warm, character-first family shows, and the 3 in the title is just part of the name. Its ceiling is the premise itself.
