Toyota Yaris HEV is a compact hybrid hatchback for drivers who want low running fuss, easy parking, and the calm feel of Toyota’s hybrid system in city traffic. By our assessment, its biggest strength is the hybrid setup itself: it is known for smooth stop-start driving, good fuel economy in mixed urban use, and a drivetrain that does much of the work without asking for much attention. The honest trade-off is that this is not a car built for excitement, and the back seat and boot are only as roomy as the small-car class allows. In practice the Yaris HEV feels light, quiet at low speeds, and very much tuned for commuting, errands, and crowded streets. Compared with non-hybrid small cars, it asks less from the driver once you are moving and less from the fuel pump over time. It is a sensible choice before it is an expressive one, and the cabin layout keeps the controls where you expect them.
