Ring fill light

Ring fill light is the small ring-shaped LED light people use for phone video, livestreams, makeup, and close-up photos where the face needs even front lighting. By our assessment, the real advantage is how it softens shadows and makes a front-facing shot look cleaner without much setup. The compromise is that it is still a close-range light, so it can feel flat, can reflect in glasses, and is not a replacement for broader lighting. In practice it is the sort of tool that makes sense when the camera is near the subject and the room is otherwise a bit dull. Against a desk lamp it is more controlled; against a full studio light it is simpler and cheaper, but also less flexible. Ring fill light is most useful for creators who shoot themselves at arm’s length, and it is not trying to light an entire room at all.
