Rattle with bells

Rattle with bells is the simplest kind of baby toy, aimed at very small children who are just learning to reach, grasp and react to sound. Its strength is immediate feedback: a shake gives a clear jingle, so cause and effect are easy to understand. The downside is just as plain, because there is not much to it beyond noise, texture and a bit of colour, so older children outgrow it fast. By our assessment, that is part of the point: it works as a first object to hold and listen to, not as a toy that keeps changing. In practice it is light, repetitive and meant for short bursts of attention rather than long play. Compared with soft books or activity toys, it asks for almost nothing from the child.
