Musical mat

A Musical mat is the kind of floor toy families use for babies and toddlers: step on a pad, tap a pictured area, and it plays sounds or simple melodies. By our assessment, it is good at turning movement into immediate feedback, which is why children usually get the idea quickly and repeat it. The downside is also obvious: the entertainment is simple, noisy and short-lived, so it does not keep the interest of older children for long. In practice it is more about repeated hopping, tapping and sound cues than about deep play, and the mat needs floor space and a bit of tolerance from the room around it. Compared with plush toys or tablets, it is a more physical and less solitary option, but it is very limited in what it can do. Musical mat is for early play and sound discovery, not for anything that asks for imagination or depth.
