LED is the plain building block behind indicator lights, light strips, torch bulbs, signs, and the kind of task lighting people use when they want low power draw and a compact source. By our assessment, it is good at turning electricity into light with little heat, and that is why it shows up almost everywhere now. The trade-off is that one word covers a lot: colour quality, brightness, and beam shape depend on the actual lamp or fixture, not on the label alone. In practice it is a practical, unshowy piece of hardware, more about efficiency and shape than atmosphere. Compared with older incandescent bulbs it usually wins on energy use and longevity, but it is not a full description of the lighting experience by itself. It suits anyone choosing components or replacement bulbs, and it tells you almost nothing until you see the rest of the product.
