Jeep Compass PHEV and Renegade PHEV are plug-in hybrid SUVs for drivers who want electric commuting with petrol backup in a compact, familiar shape. Their main advantage is the plug-in layout itself: short errands can be done on battery power, while longer trips still have the engine to lean on. By our assessment, the downside is the usual one for this kind of car, because charging adds routine and the electric part only pays off if it is actually used. In practice these are not dramatic off-road Jeeps so much as small road-going SUVs with a hybrid system layered in, and that is where they make the most sense. Against plain petrol crossovers they offer more flexibility, while against full EVs they avoid some range anxiety but keep more mechanical complexity. Jeep Compass PHEV, Renegade PHEV are for people who like the SUV shape and can handle charging as part of normal ownership.
