Horseshoes

Horseshoes are a very old piece of horse gear, and by our assessment they earn their place because they do one specific job well: they protect a horse’s hooves from wear on hard ground. The practical strength is obvious once you think of roads, stables, and long work on rough surfaces; the shoe gives the hoof a tougher edge than bare horn alone. The downside is just as concrete, because fitting and maintaining them takes skill, and a poor fit can be uncomfortable or damaging. In use, they are not glamorous at all: they are shaped metal, nails, and regular attention from someone who knows hooves. Compared with bare hooves, they add protection; compared with modern hoof boots or leaving a horse unshod, they are the traditional, fixed solution. Horseshoes suit working horses and animals that need that extra protection, while a horse with soft conditions or a lighter workload may not need them at all.
