Foxconn

Foxconn is one of the biggest names in contract manufacturing, the sort of company that builds electronics for other brands rather than selling itself as the star. By our assessment, that makes it important but also oddly invisible to most buyers, because its work shows up inside phones, computers, and other devices instead of on the box front. The strength is scale: it can handle huge, tightly controlled production runs and the unglamorous assembly work that modern gadgets depend on. The downside is that a contract maker lives or dies by margins, supply chains, and the standards set by its customers, so there is little romance in the job. In practice, Foxconn means factories, repeatable processes, and very little consumer-facing personality. It sits at the center of global electronics production, but not as a retail brand people choose for style or taste. For most people it is background infrastructure, and that is exactly how it behaves.
