Cupra Leon is the sportier take on the Leon hatchback, aimed at drivers who want Volkswagen Group engineering with a sharper chassis, stronger styling and more engine character than the ordinary family version. By our assessment, its best quality is that it keeps the everyday five-door shape while adding real pace and a much more aggressive feel from behind the wheel. The trade-off is familiar for hot hatches: firmer suspension, more road noise, and a firmer ride than the standard Leon. In practice it is the sort of car that is easy to live with on normal days but wants a decent road to show why it exists. It sits against cars like the VW Golf GTI and other compact performance hatchbacks, and it feels more restrained than full-bore track specials while still clearly aiming at enthusiasts. The limit is that the sporty setup is the whole point, so comfort is never its first language.
