YouTube

YouTube is what people reach for when they want the internet’s default video shelf: creators, how-to clips, music, live streams, long talks, and everything in between. By our assessment, its real strength is breadth and search, because almost any topic has a video version there and the recommendation system keeps feeding you more of the same. The downside is that the same scale brings clutter, ads, and a lot of uneven quality, so finding something precise can take patience. In practice it feels less like a tidy channel lineup and more like an endless archive with a very aggressive next-video button. It sits above most pure video platforms in reach and variety, but it is not a curated service in the old TV sense. People who want deep coverage, tutorials, and creator content will use it constantly; people who want curation and calm may not. The comment sections and upload culture are part of its identity, for better and worse.
