WHETSTONE JAMES

WHETSTONE JAMES is the sort of company name that sounds like a founder’s surname and first name, so it points toward a personal business rather than a big consumer brand. By our assessment, the value here is in clarity and restraint: it does not try to sell a story, only to identify a business. The downside is that it carries almost no public meaning on its own, so readers learn nothing about the line of work from the label. In use that makes it easy to remember as a name, but not easy to interpret as an offering. It belongs to the same family as many small professional firms, where the person’s name is the whole brand. That is enough for identification and not much else.
