Vertex Pharmaceuticals is a drugmaker for people who care about serious science rather than broad consumer appeal. By our assessment, its real strength is in cystic fibrosis, where it built a reputation around targeted therapies that changed how the disease is treated, and more recently it has also pushed into gene-editing and pain research through its pipeline.
