VMware is for teams that run virtual machines, private clouds, and the server infrastructure behind them, and by our assessment it has long been one of the standard names in enterprise virtualization. Its real strength is mature hypervisor software, strong management tools, and the way it lets a lot of workload sit on fewer physical servers. The trade-off is cost and complexity: VMware environments need admin attention, licensing can be a headache, and the stack is built for people who already know their way around infrastructure. In practice it is the kind of software that disappears when it is working well and becomes very visible when storage, networking, or migration plans are messy. It sits against Hyper-V, KVM, and public-cloud tooling, and VMware is a U.S. company.
