University of Amsterdam

The University of Amsterdam is a strong option for people who want a big research university in a city that feels active rather than cloistered. By our assessment, it does well at the things this kind of place should do: broad academic range, serious research, and a reputation that travels well outside the Netherlands. The honest cost is the familiar one for a large urban university: lots of moving parts, competition for attention, and less of the protected small-school feeling. In practice it feels independent; students are expected to organise themselves and work through a system that is efficient but not especially intimate. Compared with smaller colleges, it offers more breadth and less close supervision. The Astrina catalogue simply places it as a university, which fits the real-world picture, and that is enough to justify the rating.
