Tata Group is the big Indian conglomerate people meet through very different businesses at once: cars, steel, consulting, telecom, hotels, tea and more. By our assessment, its strongest point is that it can give a family of companies both scale and reputation, which is exactly what a sprawling group like this needs. The obvious downside is complexity; with so many arms, the whole thing is hard to describe in one breath and harder to manage cleanly than a single-sector company. In practice, Tata Group is less a single product than a web of industrial, consumer and services businesses that share a common name and a long public presence.
