Target feels most carefully put together when a big-box store wants to look edited rather than merely full. By our assessment, it is strong in home goods, clothing, seasonal displays, and the cleaner store design that makes browsing less tiring than in many mass-market chains. The limit is that it does not match the sheer scale of Walmart, and it is not meant to compete with Costco’s bulk model or warehouse pricing. In practice the aisles are neater, the merchandise is arranged with more visual order, and the experience has a little more style baked into it. Against its closest rivals, Target sits in the middle: more polished than Walmart, less stock-up heavy than Costco. People reach for it when they want ordinary shopping to feel a bit less blunt, but it still stays a general retailer with a hard ceiling on luxury.
