TSMC is the foundry that a lot of modern electronics quietly depends on, from phones and computers to graphics chips and other advanced semiconductors. By our assessment, it is one of the clearest examples of a company doing one hard job extremely well: manufacturing chips for other firms at scale and at very fine process nodes. That specialization is its great strength, and it is also the reason the business is not simple or casual to read from the outside. If the design house is the face, TSMC is the manufacturing backbone, which means its work sits deep in fabs, process control and yield. The downside is the obvious one for a pure foundry: customers must hand over their designs and live with a lot of dependence on one producer. Against integrated chip companies, TSMC wins by focus rather than breadth. It is a Taiwanese company, and Taiwan is exactly where the catalogue places it.
