THE VERTICAL GROUP is even more stripped down than the LLC version, and that makes it feel like a bare corporate signboard. By our assessment, it is the kind of name used when a business wants the umbrella idea of a group without the legal suffix in the everyday face. Its main virtue is the same one as many such names: it can sit over several activities without overcommitting to one product or market. The trade-off is that it says almost nothing on its own, so the real identity has to come from what sits around it. In practice, that means clean paperwork and weak instant recognition. Compared with more descriptive names, it offers structure first and meaning later.
